Phoenix Rising
Collage on board
Kate Jackson
The Phoenix “a mythical bird that never dies…It represents our capacity for vision .… with its great beauty, creates intense excitement and deathless inspiration.”
feng shui Master Lam Kam Chuen
I was overcome with the deep profound sadness that the events of September 11th triggered. The searing pain of the devastation and loss of life was enormous and the gloom seemed pervasive to all of our existence. I floundered in disbelief that we humans still had not reached the level of understanding of our true nature, which I had hoped we were nearing. My angst inclined me to tears, poetry and depression, but not visual artwork. So, when asked to participate in a show of remembrance on 9-11-02, I was filled with insecurities and self-doubt. Could I truly express what was then in my heart? I began to stay open to the images which came to me in sleep, in quiet moments and in active thinking. I realized what my heart wanted to express.
My piece focuses on the Phoenix rising above the images of the WTC destruction. Traditionally the Phoenix is depicted in brilliant reds and purples, however my desire is for it to represent the new world emerging and rising above the destructive and vengeful level of human expression to spiritual rebirth and eternal love!
